Why Boxers Do Not Master The Basics
Devin Haney vs Ryan Garcia
Recently, Devin Haney fought Garcia and lost.
In the 1st round, Haney threw a jab that would be considered amateurish in the boxing world, that led to him be stunned by Garica's left hook.
It was visibly sloppy - right hand pulling away from guarding his head, leaving it exposed, and his Left hand cocked back telegraphing his intention with his chin sticking out.
There are several ways to counter this type of jab, not just with left hook. Garica could have slipped on the inside and thrown a over right hook or snapped back for a straight counter.
To say Haney's jab was sloppy would be an understatement. It had holes everywhere.
But why was Haney's jab sloppy?
Haney has almost two decades of boxing experience since starting at the age of seven and currently holds multiple titles in two weight classes.
His obviously no puppy.
So how does such a seasoned boxer fall short on such a basic fundamental that should have been drilled in decades ago?
This isn't just about Haney. It's a issue plaguing virtually all boxers around the world.
Because Boxers rarely understand their art. They follow the standard training programs without ever connecting the relationship to it with their minds.

The reason why boxers lack fundamentals is because the way they train is NOT the same fighter they bring into the actual fight.
For example, hitting the pads, a boxer may execute flawless technique in a psychological state conducive to it, because he is solely focused on technique. However, once in the heat of a fight, this psychological state often dissipates. He sees an opportunity to land a shot as so he proceeds to land as fast and forcefully as possible. His eagerness produces a totally different psychological state to the one when in practice, which leads to a different physiological state of the body, that results in basic mistakes.
The boxer isn't eager to hit the pads. He knows his going to hit the pads, and therefore, his only concern is to execute a flawless technique. The actual fight produces a totally different psychological and physiological state when one is rushed to attack and defend!
In other words, he is a totally different fighter in the gym to the one in the fight !
Training must be crafted with the mind as the central focus. Unfortunately, coaches do not teach students to integrate the mind with their physical aspects, simply because they do not understand the mind.
The mind and training must be intricately woven together; without this connection, one cannot fully unlock their potential. Training must emphasize the alignment of mind and body, with the mind taking precedence and then string along the techniques and skills in relation to it.
